About the Author

이 책을 처음 본 것은 모마의 book shop에서였습니다.

 

그런데 문제는 그 날 들고 간 돈의 대부분을 아이들 책을 사는데 쓰고 나서 나오다가 마지막으로 서적 판매대에서 만나기는 했는데

 

뒤에 써 있는 값을 호주머니에서 탈탈 털어 맞추어서 계산대에 서니 아뿔싸 tax를 미처 계산에 넣지 못한 것이었지요.

 

그래서 어쩔 수 없이 포기하고 나왔습니다.ㅣ

 

그런데 다음 날 모마에 다시 한 번 가려고 보람이랑 나선 길에 길거리에서 본 strand가 생각나서 잠깐 내려서 보고 가자고 했지요.

 

바로 그 매장에 이 책이 더구나 약간 할인된 가격으로 있는 것입니다 ,반가운 마음에 이 책과 싸이드의 오리엔탈리즘 두 권을 구했습니다.

오늘에야 편한 마음으로 포장을 뜯어서 읽기 시작했는데요

 

101가지 이야기에 왼쪽에는 저자의 드로잉이 있습니다.

 

예를 들어 첫 날에는 after Marcel Duchamp이란 제목으로 샘이 그려져 있는 식으로요

 

101가지이니까 3일에 한 번 꼴로 번역을 하면서 올려 볼까 생각중입니다.

 

초벌로 제가 번역을 하면 이 글믈 읽는 분들이 내용을 보충해서 서로 나누어서 읽으면 하고 마음 먹게 된 것은

 

일요일 아이들과 읽는 the 100 번역 작업을 기회로 저도 눈으로만 읽는 것에서 벗어나 다른 사람들과 나눌 수 있는 일을 한 가지

 

해보고 싶다는 생각이 들어서입니다.

 

이런 식으로 약속을 하고 시도를 해야 앞으로 나갈 수 있다는 계산도 작용을 한 것을 숨길 수는 없지요.

 

언제까지나 이런 스스로에 대한 제약을 가해야 앞으로 나갈 수 있는 존재인가 나라는 사람은 하는 자괴심도 있지만

 

그래도 속으로만 고민하는 것보다는 진일보한 작업이 아닐까 싶다고 스스로를 격려하고 있습니다. 지금

art can be anything.

 

 

it is not defined by medium or the means of its production,   but by a collective sense that it belongs to a category of experience we have come to know as "art".

 

예술은 매체나 예술을 생산하는 수단에 의해서 정의되는 것이 아니라, 우리가 예술이라고 알게 된 (우리들의)

 

경험의 영역에 속하는 집단적인 의미에 의해서 정의되는 것이다.

 

 

여기서 중요한 것은 집단적인 이란 말이 아닌가 싶더라고요. 한 사회에서 무엇을 예술로 정의하는 것이고

 

무엇을 중요하게 생각하는가에 따라서 예술은 달라지는 것이란 점, 이것은 미술사를 통해서도 익히 알고 있는

 

것이니까요. 이번에 메트에서 아프리카 조각품들을 보면서 처음에 느끼던 낯섬이 어디서 오는 것일까 생각을

 

했었습니다. 그러다가 한참을 보다보니 아하 소리가 절로 나오더군요. 내가 미감이라고 생각한 것은 나 스스로

 

만든 것이 아니라 상당 부분 만들어진 것이로구나 그런 낯선 자각이 생긴 것을 느낀 전시장에서의 기억이

 

이 글을 읽으면서 다시 새롭게 떠오르고 있습니다.

 

마지막 날 휘트니 미술관의 전시장에서 만난 sherrie levine

 

그녀는 기존의 미술을 차용해서 새로운 시도를 하고 있더군요. 거기서 역시 뒤샹의 변기가 황금빛 찬란하게

 

패러디 되어서 과연 authenticity란 무엇인가, creative란 것은 무엇인가에 대한 도발적인 물음을 던지고

 

있었습니다.

 

앞으로 일년동안 이번 여행의 after가 진행될 것 같은 강력한 예감이 듭니다.

 

오늘 시작한 작업이 언제 끝날지 모르지만 그 안에서 저는 또 어떤 길과 만나게 될지, 아니면 어떤 길을

 

스스로 열어가게 될지 기대가 되기도 하고요.
