Student Accused of Lying to Harvard Was Admitted to Stanford, Too

-- Adam Wheeler, the Delaware man charged with lying about his credentials to get into Harvard and to secure nearly $50,000 in financial aid and prizes, was later admitted to Stanford as a transfer student, Massachusetts prosecutors said in court documents released Wednesday.

Cara O’Brien, a spokeswoman for Middlesex Superior Court in Massachusetts, told my colleague Abby Goodnough that the documents reveal that Mr. Wheeler was admitted to Stanford this year as a transfer student for the 2010-11 school year. Massachusetts authorities have said that Mr. Wheeler left Harvard last fall after university officials confronted him with allegations that much of his application for a Rhodes Scholarship had been plagiarized.

Officials at Harvard — as well at Yale, where Mr. Wheeler also applied as a transfer — later discovered that much of Mr. Wheeler’s application materials had been fabricated, including his erroneous assertion to Harvard that he had attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In an e-mail message Wednesday afternoon, Lisa Lapin, assistant vice president for university communications at Stanford, said Mr. Wheeler “had been accepted to Stanford as an undergraduate for fall 2010, but he will not be enrolling.”


Asked if Mr. Wheeler’s acceptance had been rescinded, and if so when and why, Ms. Lapin replied:

Whenever the university becomes aware of a possible misrepresentation of facts in an application for admission, Stanford will investigate. If at any point the university concludes that an applicant has misrepresented their credentials, we will revoke an offer of admission.

I also asked Ms. Lapin about the safeguards against fraud in the Stanford admissions system, and how Mr. Wheeler had apparently eluded them. She replied:

As you are well aware, a number of official documents are required from various sources for undergraduate admission. They don’t arrive directly from students, but from testing agencies, schools, etc. I don’t have any more information to offer specifically about this case at this time, as our admissions process is confidential.

Ms. O’Brien confirmed that the court documents also say that Mr. Wheeler applied to Williams College’s seaport maritime studies program in Mystic, Conn. A Williams spokesman, James Kolesar, refused to say whether Mr. Wheeler had been admitted to the program, but said the college had “passed on all the information it had on him” to the district attorney’s office.

Mr. Wheeler has pleaded not guilty to 20 criminal counts, including larceny charges related to the financial aid and academic prizes he received from Harvard.. --
